If you have had a bladder infection before you know that it can be painful and even embarrassing. Whilst some of us may never experience a urinary tract infection (UTI), many people suffer from them on a regular basis. There can be an underlying medical reason for this like undiagnosed diabetes for example, but in most cases it is down to poor hygiene or events in daily life. Women are more likely to suffer from UTIs than men because of the design of their reproductive system and the shorter length of the urethra.
But why do UTIs start? The urinary tract can become infected in two ways; from the top or from the bottom. It is rare for older children and adults to have top-caused infections however. All parts of the urinary tract can get infected including the urethra, bladder, ureter and the kidneys in severe cases. If the kidneys were to become infected and nor treated, kidney failure and low blood pressure are two serious possibilities.
Bacteria can get into the urethra through the meatus for several reasons. Children who wear nappies are at risk from bacteria found in faeces getting pushed into the urethra as they move around. If women and girls wipe back-to-front after urination they are moving bacteria from around the anus closer to the urethra and thus are more likely to get a UTI. Friction caused during sex is also a factor in people who experience regular infections as the friction can push bacteria into the urethra.
Whilst there are many other factors in the development of UTIs, the ones mentioned above are the most common. Pain during urination is the biggest symptom of a UTI but sufferers can also experience pain just above the pelvic bone, blood in their urine and lower back pain. However some people experience no symptoms at all when they have an infection, which can lead to more serious health problems if it doesn’t fix itself.
Cranberry capsules are one of the best preventative and treatment remedies available without prescription, although some doctors will even recommend them to their patients depending on the severity and type of infection. The natural qualities of cranberries can reduce the discomfort felt from a UTI and help to kill off bacteria before it develops into an infection. If you are in extreme pain and you notice blood in your urine it is a good idea to visit your doctor as they will be able to point you towards the right course of treatment. Start taking cranberry capsules if you are a regular sufferer of urinary tract infections and you might just notice that they go away!
