Anyone who’s had an allergic reaction to anti aging skin care products would be forgiven for looking for hypoallergenic skin care products. Similarly anyone who’s had their acne exacerbated by modern skin care products would also be forgiven for looking for non comedogenic anti aging products.
Mainstream anti aging skin care products contain a range of chemical and petrochemical ingredients that can cause health concerns including skin reactions and allergies. Ingredients such as mineral oil can clog the pores and lead to acne.
There is no formal definition of what hypoallergenic skin care means or what non comedogenic skin care means and even if you find skin care and anti aging products labelled as hypoallergenic skin care or non comedogenic skin care there is no guarantee that they really are.
The FDA does not examine and is not required to examine any claims made on the labels of cosmetics or anti aging products and these industries are entirely self regulating. Manufacturers do not need to justify any claims made on the label of the products.
There are powerful reasons for consumers to look for hypoallergenic skin care and non comedogenic anti aging products but there are many traps for the unwary and it is likely that products labeled as such may still contain many of the chemical and petrochemical ingredients that you should be avoiding.
So if you’re looking, for example, for a good hypoallergenic moisturizer, how do you go about finding one?
Rather than examine the label you must find a manufacturer of skin care products that clearly commits itself to the safety of the products that it manufactures.
There are a number of companies, one especially, that publicly evidences a corporate philosophy and a commitment to producing natural skin care products which use high quality natural ingredients which are known safe and do not produce allergies. There is an organisation called the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and it is possible on their website to sign a compact that publicly commits the company to producing products with only known safe ingredients.
And there are also companies, including this one particular company, which strive to make it totally clear on their website that they have a corporate philosophy that all products produced by that company shall be totally safe to use. This commitment to product safety comes before all other commitments.
Unusually the company that produces natural skin care products in this way does not label them as hypoallergenic skin care products or non comedogenic skin care products at all though in fact this is what they are.
In other words if you’re searching for safe skin care products you need to go beyond believing what is written on the label of the products and look at the corporate philosophy of the company that makes the products to find evidence of their commitment to producing safe products.
And you would usually find that a company with such a stated commitment to product safety makes equally effective skin care products as well.
